This winter I photographed R and P. I am photographing their wedding this summer and was so excited to spend a little time getting to know them. They are such a fun couple to work with. We started out at a local garden and even though it was a little chilly out they didn't mind hanging out in the snow.

I think this photo might be my favorite from the shoot.

One and Two

T is just a dandy...you can tell by her smile...she will give my sister an interesting couple of years. It doesn't help that I like teaching her some fun things! Hehe

R has a new brother. I stopped by their house a week ago to sneak in some newborn shots. C was so good and was a pro at waiting for his aunt to get everything ready. Sometimes I think that my niece and nephews only know me as the aunt with the camera in front of her face...at least for the first year!

Engagement from this summer

In August I did an engagement session for E and J. Their wedding is in the early summer of 2012 and I am so excited to be part of their special day.

Our first location was at the "hidden garden" it worked out perfect with the lighting.

E had emailed me a few photos that she really liked. One was of a couple sitting on a picnic table and I my favorite one of them is this one in black and white.

She also sent me a photo of a couple on the road...I love this one also!

They brought along their dogs for a few photos too.

Secret Garden

The evening I photographed A was perfect! We headed to and overgrown garden that has so much hidden beauty. A had her sister K come and assist me. She did such a wonderful job using the reflector and watching for out of place hair or the necklace that was twisted.

Northern Lights

Last night I got a call from my friend W. She was just letting me know that the northern lights were out. I got out of bed grabbed my camera and met W outside and we went a couple of miles out of town and set up to watch the display. I wish I could have stayed out a little longer.

I was able to photograph the N family two weeks ago and they were SOOOO much fun! My husband D came with us as my assistant. It was fun to show him the "photographer" side of me.

The fall color was beautiful and the weather was warm enough.

The water was a little chilly but I was happy they didn't mind.

MN wedding

I traveled to Minnesota a week ago to photograph a very good friend's wedding. There were six of us girls from Michigan that made the weekend trip. We had so much fun laughing and celebrating L and B wedding. This first photo is just before their first look. L walked down a path at her parent's house to B where he kept threatening to turn around before she got there.

L's sister H is also a photographer and did a half hour shoot where I could just be second shooter. It was so much fun just relaxing and doing some fun shots.

We took most of the pictures at L's parents home. Their yard was beautiful!

I have a few photo shoots that I have to blog about. A family shoot, a few seniors, a wedding, and some children. But I have 15 minutes so I thought I'd post a photo from the family shoot.

And one from the wedding last weekend. L mom had had a shelf full of these old bottles and I just loved them.

Story time

As I promised in the previous post about this wedding I will tell the story of K and S. A day before my assistants wedding in July of 2010 I asked K if she would want to go on a blind date. I already knew that my cousin S would go. K said yes...maybe... So after helping set up the church on Thursday K and I had to run and pick a few things up. I suggested that we drive by S house just for fun. It happened to be a rain day for him (he works construction) and he saw us so of course we had to stop. I introduced the two of them and we left kinda awkward, hey we were just caught "stalking"... K was a little unsure about the blind date at this point in time.

After my assistants wedding some of my friends and I went camping for the 4th of July. S was at the campground with a few friends and hung out on our site when K came to visit. For a few weeks S would stop by and ask about K and K would call and wonder about S. K said I could give S her phone number but she still wasn't sure...

S called K on his birthday and asked if she would go out for dinner with him. She said yes. After that date K was a little skeptical still. It didn't help that thier first date some of S friends were sitting close to them in the restaruant. I told her to go on one more date...she did.

And look what happened! I was so happy to see the two of them hit it off in the beginning of thier romance and I was so honored that they asked me to photograph thier wedding almost a year later!

They had such a fun bridal party and at least 3 or 4 of these guys were on K and S "first date".

S is so laid back!

T called me last week for a senior sitting. I photographed her brother last year, he was the firefighter.

T brought along her guitar for some photos so while snapping photos I listened to her play and sing.

She wanted some old buildings and fall color so we stopped at an old mining site.

I have used this location a few times. I love it so much that it's where D and I got a few of our wedding photos.

Just beautiful!

Around my yard

The biggest compliment I have ever received is having a mother call me to do another senior in their family after previously photographing an older sibling! I love when that happens! A came to visit me a couple of weeks ago. I did his brothers photos a couple of years ago and I was so excited to photograph A.

For A's photos we didn't have to travel very far. The first photo was taken against the foundation of my house.

This second one was taken on our unfinished patio.

In February I took H and O's pictures and H was not to sure about the lady with the camera in front of her face...so cooperation was a challenge but we got a lot of cute pictures then. Now that I am his auntie he must just like me more...or he has seen my face without the big black camera in front of it! He did so good this time! Was it just that he was used to me or the bag of candy I had to bribe him with?

O was such a pro at smiling and was the easiest little guy to shoot!

For a year now I have been offering a free sitting to families with members in our military. The Y family took advantage of this and met me on the shores of the big lake. I was so excited when they showed up all wearing some form of red. It photographs so well with the soft blues and greens of this beautiful beach!

I was able to get a couple of great shots of the entire family and then just the children.

T is now 18 months! She has such a fun and CRAZY personality. As soon as we set her in the forget -me-nots she decided that she didn't want to be in them and face whined for about one minute then her mom started throwing flowers at her and she was fine.

I have a few more wedding photos, three children, a family, two seniors, and a group of 76 teens that I have to blog about. Today I did a practice run with 76 teens and I want your opinion on what could be changed a bit. I already have some ideas... Sunday is the real photo so I have a little bit of time.

In November I did engagement photos for M and S. They were such a fun couple to work with and in April I traveled 450 miles to photograph their wedding and had SOOO much fun!

I was very lucky to capture this moment between the two of them. You can just tell how much they love each other.

M and the girls. It was supposed to rain and it had all day on Friday so we were so happy for the sun...or at least everyone else was but me...I like fog.

And a marina! I was so excited to get to photograph the couple at one of my favorite locations...water, boats, docks...who can not LOVE a marina.

Wedding day morning

On the morning of my wedding day we got ready at my home. I had a friend come over to cook breakfast for about 15 girls. We got our hair done, ate, and got dressed. Then the photographers nightmare...late groom. But even with D being an hour late I wasn't worried...I had planned for this and we still had three hours of photography for just D and me.

I sure like being on the other side of the camera though, it was hard not shooting myself but both girls did an amazing job! These are just a few for now so enjoy!

A beautiful spring day in April

Two weeks ago I traveled to photograph this wedding. K got ready for the day at her parents home and I found this trunk and just had to use it for some of the details of the day. I loved her red shoes and flowers.

K and J's first look.

This was my favorite spot to photograph K and J. I just loved the brown for the background. K and J took a few hours to be photographed without the bridal party. I love when a bride and groom do this because lets them spend some time alone (of course I'm there along with my assistant) on a crazy busy day.

After photographing the cat tails for almost an hour...hehe we headed into the woods. The sun started to come out and the wind died down. There had been rain in the forecast but we were lucky and it held off for the most part!

Bridges! I love bridges! Plus the red brush in front of them...LOVE!

K and J were so much fun to photograph and the wedding party was a hoot.

Last stop in the park was by this fence.

Someone brought this french toast from one of J "favorite" places to eat. It traveled 500 miles to make it to his dinner plate!

K and J thank you so much for letting me be a part of your special day. It was such a fun and relaxing day for the first wedding of the season.

Second shoot *Not my photos

As a photographer I had so many ideas for photos that I wanted, and I still didn't get to do them all...poor D. I'm so happy that he's such a good sport about my couple hour photo shoots in 30 degree weather! Oh ya, and the hat I wanted him to wear! That's just one reason that I love him.

My assistant K took these photos. We had a couple of pictures done earlier but I needed a few without snowflakes in the air for our wedding announcements so K was willing to do another shoot. Thanks a bunch K!

Yes I purchased yellow rain boots, that I will be wearing on my wedding day! We are going to be in a couple of locations that rain boots are going to be the preferred footwear.

I could not have engagement photos without a camera...hey it's hard for me to go on a photo shoot and not be taking pictures. So K didn't mind that I took along my Canon AE-1 and took some shots of D...it's different using film, were D's eyes closed...is the exposure correct...I never thought I'd be saying this five years ago but I LOVE digital photography.

Thank you again K for taking time to photograph D and I! Also thank you L for coming along and using the reflector and holding my coat ready for when I needed to be warm again!

T is almost sixteen months and loves to run! So trying to get her to sit by Z was almost nearly impossible...most of the photos were like this.

I did not take these photos...because they are of me and my fiance'! My assistant K did our engagement photos and she is going to be doing my wedding! I am so happy that she is going to take on my wedding, I could not imagine anyone else photographing me and D on our special day! This first picture was actually taken by W, she is going to be K's assistant. K knows my style so well it's almost as if I'm taking my own photos...hehehe I love this one how she focused on the trees instead of us.

I have a new subject! Z is a little brother to T. These photos are his newborn ones and at the same time that I did these I did T's one year photos. She got to go first to show Z how it was done. Once she was done we had to put her in her highchair so she wouldn't tackle Z. She got to watch from a distance while snacking on frozen peas.

Breath of fresh air! Why I LOVE my job!

This wedding took place in August. N and T were some of the most carefree people I've worked with. The place that they wanted to get married wasn't an option because of the windy weather so a quick location change had to be done. (It was just a matter of moving about fifty feet to the right...so not that big of a deal) Some people would've been very upset but not N and T! Here's a few details.We were able to get some photos of them in the spot that they had wanted to get married at so that was a plus! After the ceremony we took the family photos and then headed to another location.N is finishing up law school so a few photographs in front of a local Court house was a unique way to make their photos special. I love when couples do different things like this.Then we headed to the beach. We had such a blast!I kept the seagull just for fun!N and T had rented two vans for the bridal party to travel in. So everyone was always together. On our way to the reception we stopped at a special location to N.
This is only a small glimpse into N and T's day. We also stopped at a jamboree and one of the drivers sang a few songs while the girls danced. Then came the reception. I did something totally different there...N had wanted a photo booth...so I made one. She had collected tons of props for people to have photos taken in. I left my assistant Wendy to run that while I photographed the other parts of the reception. I'll have to post those photos later! This was such a refreshing wedding for me because W had never shot a wedding with me and throughout the day she kept reminding be that I have the coolest job. People invite me to hang out with them on one of the most important days of their lives. Sometimes I forget to think about that! So THANK YOU N and T for sharing your special day with me and W, and THANK YOU W for reminding me why I LOVE my job!

Today I went for a drive with another photographer friend. P knew of this old abandoned house so we went to check it out. The floor plan was awesome, the basement was flooded, windows were broken, I LOVED this door and almost wanted to take it home this me for art in my house. This photo will have to do. Some little critters made this their home.

They made sure to clean for company.

Fall Flying!!!!

This past week I was able to go flying with T again. This time there was fall colors and open windows. It was so amazing with the wind in my hair and a camera in my hand!

I was trying to find a lake that a friend lives on...I don't know why they don't label them so we can spot it from the air... after flying around for a few minutes I thought this might be the lake... it wasn't. Oh well now I have to go flying again and this time I have GPS coordinates so I can find the lake. Turns out that the lake I was looking for was only a mile away. Somebody should label things though I think.

Yesterday I had a couple of friends model for me in a western style photo shoot. I had a barn to use and couldn't wait to try it out. I wish I would've remembered my guitar, had an old horse saddle, a ropers rope, a pitchfork...but no such luck...just awesome models.

At least we had hats, jeans, and boots. The three people who modeled for me even arrived wearing matching red plaid shirts...not that you can tell in the photos I posted but it was pretty cool.

Firefighter

K was going to do some pictures with his 4-wheeler but decided that photos with a firetruck and fallout gear was more important. I have never done any like that and was excited for the challenge!K is a volunteer firefighter for a local town. I love when seniors have something different for photos.

During the 4th of July weekend I photographed a FUN family. I spent about and hour and a half getting to know them. The children were so well behaved...they earned tickets for sparklers for each photograph they sat through! What a brilliant idea.

All the Grandchildren. I didn't think I would know anyone in the family, turns out the Grandfather was someone I saw almost every week at my old job! I don't know who was more surprised, me or him. I hadn't seen since I quite a few months ago.

Tonight I did family photos at a local garden. This was for an anniversary, a young man joining the marines, and a son who was visiting. I love the blues and greys that they choose to wear.

M ended up sticking around after and we got to talk photography! I love when I get to chat about cameras, lenses, and anything photography. I hope M will give me a call some time to photograph things!

K had some beautiful weather for her evening of photos! It was a little windy but we worked with it. This field is right behind my house and everytime I go for a run I dreamt of photographing someone here. K was up for it so I was pumped!

Cousins

I did a few photos this past week of my niece and nephew and cousin P. These are just a few for now. T is now 8 months and has the sweetest facial expressions. This first one is her dad's scowl...hehehe

R is now 9 months and is always on the go. He's crawling and getting ready to take off at a dead run!

P is 22 months, loves to run and play with cars. I got the prop from a friend of mine and this was the first time I used it. I can't wait to try it out again.

I took these photos about a month ago. The B family was so much fun to photograph. Little A was awake for the first 25 minutes then fell asleep and didn't even mind getting her outfit changed.

My assistants wedding!

I have photographed over 25 weddings with K and was so excited to photograph hers. I was so happy to be able to give another one of my very best friends her wedding photos. It was a little stressful since K knows the ins and outs of a wedding day and she had high expectations. These are just a sneak preview of K and D's photos and I hope she checks them out and loves them. Just wait til you see the rest K! These first two photos are ones from when they first saw each other. We borrowed my cousins field in the valley and they turned out awesome!

This was also one of the easiest weddings I've ever photographed because K knew exactly what she wanted and her and D were so relaxed in front of the camera, just like their engagement photos, I was able to let them be themselves.

Since K didn't want to be my assistant for her own wedding we had our good friend H. K taught her everything she knew during B and E's wedding and H did a GREAT job on K and D's.

This last one is one of my favorites. I love that they are just in their own little world so unaware that I'm photographing them.

Second wedding of the weekend

Here are a few photos from my second wedding last weekend. I think I should do this more often. I'm getting the photos ready in record speed! K and J were married at K's sister's house on the canal. It was a small ceremony with immediate family. Then they had a reception a few hours later so we had a couple of hours to do photos.

This is a different editing tool that I was trying, not sure if I like it...

So I wanted to see if I could make the gum "pop" hmmmm still thinking about it.

J had this idea. I like how it turned out.

My best friends wedding

I have been friends with B for over 16 years. He is such a special guy and one of my best friends. When he called from Afghanistan to say he was getting married to E I was so excited...then he told me the date...June 12th. I already had a wedding booked for this day and was not going to be able to make it. But B called everyone and changed his wedding to June 11th just so I could photograph it. I was so happy I was able to be part of B and E's wedding day. So these are a few photos from my little seven hour trip to Grand Marais, MN. This was the first part of my busy weekend. Thursday H, K and I left home at 6am, drove straight to GM brought our stuff into the house, promised B and E that it would NOT dare to rain, and headed into town to scout out a few locations.

Grand Marais is located on Lake Superior so most of the photographs were taken with the lake. B and E took their photos Thursday night and the weather was a dream, not to hot or cold, overcast with no hint of rain! I had so much fun with them that I think we stayed in town for two hours. (They may have been getting sick of photo...not me!)

E's parents and sister also came on the shoot with us.

Reflections are always fun.

H and K were more than just photography assistants this time. They both ran to the flower shop and made a bouquet for E. Here real flowers were coming on Friday but we needed something for the pictures on Thursday. Thanks guys for doing more than your job called for.

There was a side of a building that had tiles on it. I wanted to try some different things.

After the photos on Thursday we were able to just hang out. It was so much fun meeting E, since she was going to marry B. Friday morning we got up and P and A made a wonderful breakfast. THANKS! Then B's family started arriving around noon. The wedding was supposed to take place outside but the pouring rain decided that inside was best. So right after the wedding K H and I loaded the car and started our drive back home. We got in around midnight and off to sleep I went to wake up and photograph K and J's wedding starting at 8am! Pictures to come soon on that one.

Thank you so much B and E for letting me be a part of a special day in both of your lives. I love you both! See you guys in Michigan very soon I hope!

Busy weekend

Here is a sneak peak from two weddings that I photographed this weekend. Thursday morning K, H and I took off for a destination wedding in Grand Marais, MN (seven hours from my home) We photographed B and E Thursday evening and then their wedding was Friday afternoon. We left right after the wedding and I was up and photographing J and K's wedding at 8 am along with H. I am just going through some of the photos now and these are a two that I love.

Been a while

So I've been MIA for a while. I just switched jobs after working at a bank for 7 years. It has been a little crazy for the past few weeks. I have a few family photos that I just finished up and tomorrow morning I'm leaving to photograph a wedding 350 miles away. The wedding is a very good friend of mine so I couldn't say no even though I'll be traveling right after to photograph a wedding on Saturday at home! Call me crazy but it'll be fun...Sunday I can relax right?

Forget me knots and apple blossoms are some of my favorite splashes of color in the spring. I was photographing for a couple of hours last Saturday and I wanted to find an apple tree that was pink, not white. I found one! There was even a Bee who stopped by for a photo.

Both of these flowers were located in swamps...not sure what kind they are but I like the white ones with the fuzzy creepy arms.

R will be seven months in a little over a week, boy how time flies. These were taken at my parents house last night. He loves to be outside eating grass or flowers.

Dad wanted one of R on the snowmobile. (Nope it's not put away yet...still waiting for the last snow!)

Sneak Peek

This wedding was very special for me. K is a cousin on my fathers side and J is a 1st cousin on my mothers side and I introduced them last July. J and K had never met each other before July and when K, K, and I were on our way back from Maine we stopped at my aunts for the weekend. I wanted K to have someone to hang out with so I called J. The two hit it off right away! J even stayed until midnight...that's pushing it for him when he had to work at 6am. They talked for a while then started dating. J made many 500 mile trips to visit K.

Mine and J's grandpa has an old Model A and J's parents had photos with one just like it when they were married so it was so much fun to have the car as a "prop" for J and K. All J needs in this photo is a cigar and a tommy gun...we had a gun but didn't want to take it out in a state park.

Perfect Start

T and J's wedding was the perfect start to this years weddings. It was at a park on the "big lake" There were about 20 people attending the ceremony and the reception was at a local restaurant. I had talked to T in the morning because we still weren't sure if the wedding was going to be outside or at a church. The wedding was at 4 and at 2:45 T decided that she didn't care if it was cold and windy she wanted to get married outside. Once we arrived at the park there was just a slight breeze and it was sunny! She made a great decision!We did some photos on the beach and then headed up into the woods for a few more.

Thank you T and J for letting me be a part of your special day! I was happy everything worked out and I was able to photograph your wedding!

These hats are props I have from B, stop by her shop on Etsy. (jitterbeans) I love when babies sleep through the entire session. T was awake for most of it but we were able to sneak a few photos with different hats on while he dozed off for a bit. This is one of her newest hats. I love it!

Oh to be young again

My friend H babysits for I and C. She asked if I would do some photos for their mother for mothers day and I was happy to have some younger models! I loved going down the slide time after time. She would come and look at the photo I took as soon as she got to the bottom. The energy of a two year old is so awesome! C loved climbing on the logs, she tried so hard to keep up with I!

Getting the two of them to sit together and look in the same direction...this was the best one I think I got.

Having I say cheese was not getting a smile with her beautiful dimples so we switched it up to ROAR! That got her to show her sweet smile.

C sat so nice for her photo while I ran around trying to distract her.

Great way to spend an afternoon.

Sunday I think I photographed my last senior for the class of 2010...but then again maybe not. B brought along two of her sisters and we headed to a local river and then to the "big lake." Oh ya, we did some indoor shots too.

There were tons of people at the beach. In this photo there was a man fishing behind her...he's not there now.

I've started using my reflector more. It gives a more natural light than just a flash.

I have found something else that makes me almost as happy as photography. It's flying! Of course I take pictures while flying...I went up with my cousin T yesterday and I was able to have him fly where I wanted and photograph the lighthouses in the area. I went for an hour and a half and only got the west side...shoot I'll have to go again! The weather was perfect for photographing shipwrecks on the bottom of the lake. Next time I'll be bringing my shipwreck map and photograph more, and my polarizing filter...I forgot it on the table:(This is one of my favorite spots to take a quick hike to on the 4th of July and swim

T I hope you don't mind that I will be calling almost every month to fly. I have so many different places that I want to see from the air. I felt safe in your plane when we were flying but in the beginning when you were explaining how to fly the plane in the event of you passing out, or if we crash and the plane starts on fire how to climb into the tail and cut my way out of the canvas...I wasn't so sure I wanted to get in. I guess that's how you weed out the wimps! Thank you so much for bringing me and I will be calling...I want to get the east side, some of the lakes, a little south, some sunsets, trees with leaves, fall colors, snow, wolves, eagles, moose, people...you get the point.

When I went to NYC last summer I decided to try photographing people in a completely photojournalistic way. It was way out of my box to try photographing this way, I'm so used to posing people and then taking the picture.I was able to watch the people on Wall Street.

There were still tourists just like us. I have only been to the city on the weekends and there are tons of tourists and no construction workers or people on Wall Street.

Today I was able to take some newborn pictures of my friend K's newest addition the her family. He slept most of the time and K let me pose him anyway I wanted!

At the beginning of April I made a trip to Arizona to visit one of my friends. She brought us to Sedona, Jerome, and the Grand Canyon. This first photo was taken in Jerome with the mountains of Flagstaff in the background. Jerome is an old copper mining town on the face of a cliff!Taken in Sedona, it was beautiful there!

Grand Canyon...HUGE 1 mile deep, 18 miles across I just couldn't photograph the sheer size of this ditch. It was amazing to see that a river did all of this.

Last fall I did a photo session at a local school as a fund raiser for the PTA. We had a pretty good turn out. Some people wanted Christmas photos, some family portraits, others portraits of their pets. I had a lot of fun doing this event and I hope that this year we can do something like this again. I do have quite a few photos from this but here are a few just to start.

Engagement Photos

M and T had some photos done about a week ago. We had to get some by the lake even though it was a wee bit windy. As I'm looking at this photo the beach was washing away in a small area next to T. hehe didn't notice that before.

Something a little different...does anyone have any comments on this?

After photographing T and M at two different locations I wanted to "drag" them to a third, they were willing to go so I was happy because I could get some shots like this. I love back lighting, its one of my favorite ways to photograph a couple at sunset.

Copper Dog 150

The Copper Dog 150 took place this past weekend. I had a chance to volunteer as a dog handler Friday night and LOVED it. Friday morning RVB hosted the registration and vet checks for all mushers. I was able to photograph some of the event.

Due to unseasonably warm weather the race was rerouted but many of the teams still finished at the new location.
